About Doug's daily use gear

Why does Doug carry both a white handkerchief and red bandana, as shown in the image at http://www.equipped.org/pp/pic66.htm. I don't know, so I thought I'd ask you folks.<br><br>

Craig,<br><br>For everyday use, the hanky is used to blow my nose, wipe dribble from my beard and otherwise attempt to maintain a more or less civilized appearance. The bandana is heavier duty and larger for sweat. When it's 115 F in the shade, you tend to sweat a lot. :-) I tend to sweat easily anyway, even in moderate temperatures. Sometimes I cary two. From the perspective of being prepared, most hankies are too small and too thin to tie over your mouth to act as a improvised dust/smoke filter, or as as a sweat band, etc. (you can hold them there, but that ties up one hand that you may otherwise need. You can also leave the hankie folded and hold it in place over your mouth with the bandana, for even more dust/smoke filtering. Obviously, it's best to wet them for such purposes. A real smoke filter is better, and I have normally carried an Essex PB&R Plus 10 while flying commercial, though I suspect those days are over with the asinine screening process currently in place. I may have to downgrade to a less effective smoke mask like the EVAC-U8 that doesn't look so much like a "bomb" on the x-ray, which had already cause delays at times even with the former even more lax screening. <shrug> It also doesn't hurt to have something bright on your to use as a signal of sorts, and since I generally don't dress in bright colors because I'm normally trying to remain inconspicuous, it could serve for that purpose as well.<br><br>Doug Ritter<br>Editor<br>Equipped To Survive

I've palavered about bandannas before, but one more time. I wear traditional LARGE cowboy scarves or rags. Mine are silk and bright red. Did you know that by rubbing a needle vigourously across silk it will magnetize? I was sceptical before I tried it ( not a bad policy for everything ). I don't plan on losing all three of my compasses, but it's worth knowing. Mine are BIG @ 36". I get mine from a local seamstress, but you can buy them from the many western shops online and off. I use mine everyday besides actually wearing the things.<br><br>
