Financial Preparedness - 01/25/04 06:51 AM
There have been some great threads here on backing up data and keeping all that personal financial information accessible and portable for unexpected situations (I love the new USB micro-drives). Anyway, along those same lines, here is a good list of documents to consider and when to dispose of archives:

Thanks for the iinfo. We just went through our annual disposal of old records. I was aware of the 7 year rule for most items but this page answered a lot of questions.

This page answered many questions and brought up a few.
I heard that major tax and financial laws had changed. We are now encouraged to keep stuff for 10 rather than 7 years, as the IRS is allowed to pry that far back into your history.
I don't have that kind of room in our small townhouse.

You could employ a data-scanning service. They could put all your >10 year-old records on a DVD and give you multiple copies. Just a few DVDs instead of boxes of papers. Just a thought.
