Hi Paul,

Basically the snare is a noose of wire or light line that is strategically located in a small animal pathway in the woods, the noose is normally slightly larger than the anticipated dinners head. The animal runs down the pathway, it's head passes through the noose and the animal is strangled. When approaching a snared animal, use caution, it may still be alive and if so, will rightly be ready to use teeth and claws to good effect. Keep in mind that this is normally used in a life or death matter for getting a meal to survive. It is not a normal sporting type method of hunting, and in some places may be illegal and/or have restrictions regarding the use of snares.

While one can be used, having several set at a time will help ensure a meal. Be sure to remove the snares when moving on though...

Do a forum search, select all dates, all posts. Key in searchwords, "cheatsheet" "snare" "stop list". There were several fairly extensive threads over the last year and a half that discussed snares. The "cheatsheet" is a little list that Bill Vannerson set up and kindly shared among ETS readers as well as on his scouting website (sorry, forget the name of it at the moment, I'll look for it later). It is a several page folding list that prints out in a size that nicely fits into an Altoids tin. I believe that he had two cheatsheets, one with and one without the snare info.

Also see about downloading the armed forces survival manual. It is in *.pdf format and has all sorts of great info. regarding food procurement etc. I'm going to look around and see if I can find the actual link names to make it easier for you. Seems to me that Doug has a link to the survival manual somewhere on ETS. HTH

To get to the armed forces manual go to the ETS home page, click on the picture of Deep Survival, and scroll down to the pdf link. It's about 5 or 6 books down

Try this site -> http://www.wmuma.com/tracker/skills/snares/index.html

Not just for snares, but has plenty of other good links. The suburban firestarting thread referenced the soda-can-parabolic-reflector firestarter here also. BTW, it works, tried it this weekend.

One of the web's authorities on trapping is Buckshot. His article on snaring is a great place to start. There are many other very interesting articles there as well. He also sells snares and other traps at a very reasonable price.

Check out [this link] on the US-RSOG site. Their excellent survival book has more details. BTW they are big fans of Buckshot's products.

Here's the link to the non-snare PSK cheat sheet. I removed the snare diagrams from the original as I decided that since food is relatively low on list of priorities for most of the survival situations I may find myself, the space was better used for higher priority items. I'm mostly a car camper and will not likey be in a situation where I'll be weeks away from rescue. Also, I'm not a hunter, so I lack the knowledge and experience to be a very successful snarer. I did keep the wire in my PSK and have read articles on snaring, so I still could use the techniques if I had to. I did retain the fishing knot tips as I'm more likely to bve successful fisherman than a trapper.

I may have the snare version of the PSK around on one of my archve disks. But the images are also available elsewhere on the web.

Thank you guys, I am going to start practicing making snares that way I have something other then just the deadfall trap I know how to do. Though of course there will be no actual animal snaring in practice. (though there are some mice in my shed I wouldn't mind getting rid of) <img src="images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

I believe that some animals are open for extermination year-round by whatever means. Mice probably qualify, as to squirrels and many other rodents. Problem is that traps of all kinds are somewhat indescriminate in what they catch so if you accidently find something out of season in your trap you are suddenly in violation.
