So... this is my current EDC.

So... this is my current EDC. - 10/26/03 11:26 PM

- Leatherman Wave.

- Camillus CUDA EDC.

- Benchmade Benchmite (keyring).

- ARC AAA (keyring).

- Photon Microlight III Green (keyring).

- Photon Microlight III Orange (keyring).

- Sebertech Sebertool M3.

I'd like to complete this with a SAK and a flashlight. Problem is I don't know which ones to choose (there are soooo many models).

I like Victorinox Cybertool 41 a lot, but maybe I should get Swisschamp XLT because of the magnifying glass (a must in every EDC worth its name, if you ask me). Anyway, neither of them have locking blades but, since I already have the Benchmite, the EDC and the Wave; I'm not sure whether this should be a concern.

I also like Surefire E1e and E2e, but I'm not sure which one is better for EDC purposes. E1e is way smaller and much less brighter than E2e, but from what I have read, with KL1 both have similar lumen output.

Any advice on this, please?

Thank you all in advance and forgive my grammar and syntax mistakes (English is not my native language).

It seems to me that with the wave and the microlights you don't need the SAK and flashlight. Any special reasons why you want to double up? (I double up on gear all the time. Especially the simple stuff.)

For all aroud use/abuse a AA or AAA Maglite is great. They're easy to carry and aquire batteries for jsut about anywhere. The extra bulb in the tailcap and solid aluminum housing make them extremely durable.

The E1 and E2 are great lights, but keep in mind the run time is only an hour to an hour and a half and the batteries can't be picked up at just anywhere.

The SAK is a unique breed of knife. Which model you choose all depends on what you want to do. How are you going to be using it? Is the cybertool worth the weight? If it is, then there you have it. If not, check out the tinker and super tinker. They're my favorite all around SAKs for EDC.

My EDC is as follows:

Benchmade 940 Osborne
Leatherman WAVE
Leatherman Micra (keyring)
Photon II (keyring)
Maglite AAA w/paracord lanyard
Strike anywhere matches in GI matchbox

Just somw thoughts. Let me know what you think.

I have an Arc AAA on my keyring and a Mag 2 AAA in my other pocket. The Mag is cheap enough to hand over is someone wants to borrow my light plus it used the same AAA cells as the Arc AAA. Also since its a incandescent light I can use it until the batteries run down and the light gets dim then feed them to the Arc AAA which can keep working for a lot longer. I carry a Wave on my belt and the backup for it is a Gerber ridge knive with stud and clip removed so it is thin enough to fit in my key case with the Arc and my keys. Since I need my keys to leave the house and or drive anywhere I will always have the Arc and gerber blade with me both stealthaly hidden in the leather key case making my mini psk.

As far as SAKs go, I have found a new EDC tool in my Victorinox Midnite MiniChamp II.

It offers a red LED and a retractable pen in place of the usual tweezers and toothpick. The MiniChamp is the same length as the Classic or the Rambler, but is thicker.

It has many tools, but is small enough that no one will comment if you deploy it. The MiniChamp is almost toylike in its appearance, which is fine by me.

I highly recommend the SureFire E2e light. While the included bulb puts out 60 lumens for 1:15, you can drop in the 25 lumen bulb and get about 2:30 out of it. The 25 lumen bulb still outperforms any Mag-type light and is unbeatable when you need more than immediate-area lighting.

The one-cell E1e is only slightly shorter and just as thick, but provides much less light. There are also a lot more accessories for the two-cell E2e.

SureFire is selling the lithium DL123 cells at $15 for a box of 12. But don't buy the light from them; better deals can be had all over the Internet on the lights.

I carry the E2e in my pocket and an LED light on my keychain.

As far as a SAK goes, I would recommend an explorer or yoeman if you are lookng for something that has a magnifying glass. They are smaller than a SwissChamp, although not all inclusive. And I have to ask, why a SAK if you have a wave?

Another, cheaper option for a magnifying lens is a... (I am having a brain freeze)...one of those flat ones you can buy at walmart. I carry one in my wallet and one in my PSK. That is an option if you dont want to add anything else to your utility belt.

As far as a flashlight goes, I would agree with the other posters and go with the old reliable Mag light. I have three or four of them all over and I like them because they are plenty bright for me, and you have two photons already, although they are not white. Maybe you could switch one of them out for a white one.

just my two cents.

Hmmm... good question. Perhaps it's because I like to have a full backup of everything I carry. I always liked SAKs and I guess it would be a good replacement, just in case I feel like leaving the Wave at home (y'know, SAKs seem pretty harmless to most people).

Anyway, I must confess I'm a gadget freak and a knife nut.

Because two is better than one? You have a backup if one fails. I believe the SEALS say, "One is none and two is one."

Speaking of the devil... Do you think the SAK's magnifying glass will suffice as a firestarter?

I've tried the magnifying glass from the SAKs as a fire starter and have had no sucess. I don't think it has a high enough mag. power. There are several pocket sized mag. glasses that do, local outdoor/sewing/drug stores often turn up several decent ones. Give it a shot.

I would't be too dependant on it though, you are at the mercy of the sun.

When I want to replace my wave for a short period I carry a Victorinox Delux Tinker. While it really is not a subsitute for the wave I find it does a good job for minor tasks. But it lacks a magnifying glass and when compared to the cybertool or swiss champ it's really quite a minimal tool. So I guess I'm not sure why I'm posting this except to say WOW that would be a lot of EDC. But back ups are back ups and if you feel comfortable with those tools then I would go for the Swisschamp.

What were you using for tinder when it worked for you? I've tried several and had no luck.

Whatever I have on hand. The warm summer sun helps. Sunlight during other seasons is problematic.

I do the same thing... - 10/28/03 05:45 PM

Carry both a Wave and a Swiss Army knife that is...actually two SAKs if you count the little one on my key chain. The bigger SAK rarely sees much use, but I like having it around all the same.

The Wave sees a lot of use, and the little SAK is generally more of a personal grooming aid. Still, if I need a sharp blade, the tiny SAK draws a lot less attention than the Wave.
