Leatherman folding EMT shears

Has anyone tried these. What are opinions thanks Dave

Have not, never really understood the point of them.

If using trauma shears for their intended purpose, the Leatherman look almost impossible to sterilize afterwards.

Trauma shears are so cheap, they can be considered disposable if don't have access to equipment like an autoclave.

If you mean the Raptor,they are massive and cut well. I tried that with decommissioned motorcycle pants. The leather and soft protectors are no match for the shears. They are a little pricey. They have a lot of cervices and may be a little hard to clean and desinfect. I still wonder why it has a gut hook.

I believe the good folks at Leatherman would classify that as a seatbelt cutter...

Why would you need a hook for seat belts when you have some capable shears right in your hand?

honest question. I have never had to cut a seat belt....

The implement has two basic modes, one folded where you can use the window breaker, and deploy the strap cutter and window breaker blade. I carry mine that way and would use the strap cutter. But if I had it unfolded into shears mode, I would use the shears.

I am an unrepentant Leatherman fanboy and I have to confess I think it’s a bit much to have both.

I think it’s well-made and works to do what it’s designed to do, quite well.

Every professional medic I know (somewhere between five and ten) carries a less expensive single-purpose pair of shears that are easier to clean.

I own two Leatherman Raptors; one was a gift. One is attached to the trauma kit in my main car-based emergency kit, and the other is kept on my person at the range.

In class last weekend, it happened that none of our professional medic students were able to attend, and so I was the lead medic that day. If any of the pros are present, I’ll serve as backup medic.

It may have to do with deployment. The shears work far better for this task. I did not have to cut seat belt in an emergency scenario. I did cut some in training or practice though.

I have a pair of these and love them. I am a FORMER WEMT, and love the functionality of the sheers. What I do love is that they fold up so they are easy to throw on the belt and have ready. I have cut hardware cloth with them along with some rather serious rope/material.

While not cheap, they are well valued in my opinion.
