Its a cheap, compact way to maintain temperature in colder climes.

Oh heck yeah - says the Canadian prairie boy. Mid-weight tops and bottoms plus regular underwear, socks, toque and bandana. Plus extra outerwear - gloves, wool anorak and insulated bibs. The other day I transferred my kit to a larger pack instead of hanging a bunch of stuff on the outside, all the items are inside.

Just how offensive are your knees that you need lawyers if you get seen in your underwear? :-)

In long johns one looks like cowboys in comedy westerns. An advantage as far as I'm concerned.
