Food Expiration Dates - 04/15/20 06:41 PM

Some interesting info regarding food expiration dates. I know I've often used stuff well beyond the "Best By" date.

Few things wouldn't have expected.

Like that glass being inferior to metal.

Sadly they don't elaborate.

"What about canned and jarred goods? As a rule, metal lasts longer than glass, which lasts longer than plastic."

I guess it's because metal is fully sealed? Whereas glass has bungs and rubber seals? Dunno.

Probably light has something to do with it too.

In my experience foods with a high acid content such as tomato sauce or sauerkraut do better in glass than in metal cans. I've had a few rust through in metal. (Granted, some well after the 'use by' date.)

Usually food jars are stored in a dark place.

Atleast for "canning" jars, eventually the seal can fail. I had to throw out most of a batch of pickles after the seals failed years after they were canned.
