Zippo in the game - 03/29/20 01:27 AM

If everyone else is already aware of this feel free to delete this post but I've recently discovered Zippo is in the survival fire starter game.

It's nice to see a good company being creative and trying new markets. Looks interesting. The paraffin case might be best understood via a video. I'm a ferro rod fan. It seems Zippo could make a great robust one-handed ferro sparker like the Sparklite.

The paraffin holder/sparker is pretty close, no?

I have three of the TMKs and two of the EFKs. For some reason images aren't working but you can click on the link. They've been out for a few years I think, I took my pics in 2017 IIRC.

The striker of the TMK is sealed under a rubber cap.

I have stick on striking paper so I stuck another round on the bottom of the inside of the cap. Also, I rolled up a section cut out of a clear plastic bottle and stuck striker paper on the outside of the plastic and inserted it into the case, then added matched. That way I have a sealed 2" x 4" section of striking paper. The case is very large and holds a ton of regular UCO Stormproof. I put the big matches in for the photo but after testing I opted to have 30 or so standard UCO instead of the giant ones. There's also room for Baddest Bee Fuses and some Hammaro Tinder Card.

I wasn't super impressed by the giant Zippo Typhoon Matches. They're okay but they don't burn with the ferocity of the UCO Titans.

The EFK is also neat. Yeah, one handed. The included tinder is pretty good stuff I opted for smaller tinder and a few matches.

Overall they're good products. I don't think the sparks are quite as strong with the EFK as a regular Spark-Lite that Doug includes in the PSP but it does work fine. Of the two I like the giant match case best.

I haven't tried the Zippo fire steel as I already have at least 30 fire steels. grin

Oh yes!! I didn't see the video when looking from my phone. Slick.

I need to take another pic of the way the inside if set up. With cylindrical match cases I always do the rolled-up-striker-facing-outward and slide it into the tube. Then matches inside that. There's no way the match heads can contact the striking paper since facing the opposite direction. To use you can pull the whole thing out and wrap it around the match case for support. Sometimes I pull it up 1/2" and strike the top but honestly that's probably not the safest way (risks lighting the other matches).
