Winter Survival Story - 01/11/20 01:22 AM

A guys cabin burned down, and he was forced to survive for 23 days in subzero temperatures, using only what he could salvage and improvise.

Read his story here: Survivor

Video from the rescue helo

We've had a very strange winter so far. Hardly any snow all fall, and very warm, in fact 2009 was the warmest year on record in Anchorage. Then right at Christmas time we had a good dump of snow and it turned cold. And has stayed cold ever since. Skwentna, near where this story takes place is in the Susitna Valley, about 70 miles north of Anchorage. Temperatures in Skwentna have dropped as low as -32 Deg F (-35 C) during the first week in January. And more snow up there than we've had in town.

Awesome story! I read an article elsewhere but nothing so thorough. Sounds like overall he was very very prepared! But he had all his eggs in one basket, so to speak. It would have been wise to have a bit of stuff stashed in the little shed he had. Still he did great to keep going til air rescue arrived. He's lucky he wasn't a hermit! Once his family didn't hear from him for a while it sounds like he knew he just had to hunker down and wait.

Thanks for posting this, ASKAR!
