sterile or disinfective adhesive bandages ? - 04/15/03 12:02 PM

mine medical supplies in mine PSk are almost experired, so time to pack new stuff in them ( i also got some new idea's and gear to try out for mine PSK ). So mine question is would disinfective Adhesive Bandages ( betadine type )instead of just plain old sterile Adhesive Bandages be beter ? And why does no one packs disinfecting Adhesive Bandages in there kit ( i havent seen kits with them...) ? is there a reason i have missed ? Exsept that some people are more sensative to iodine.

Well, for me the main reason would be cost. The adhesive bandages with built-in antibiotic are about twice as expensive as the plain ones. I would also wonder about the tendence of that type to leak or ooze inside your kit, especially if the kit was in a hot environment.

well actually they looks pretty dry to me, you can't really see/feel liquid stuff in it. Besides they come with there own wrapper. They don't cost that much more compaired to high quality plasters and they are good ! they streches, are waterproof and they stay sticked on you, without leaving residue , and disinfect. They cost more than the cheaper one's but you will get a lot in return for it, thats mine opinion.... besides we ( or atleast me ) spend a lot on survival equipment anyway, a $ or 2 extra can't harm, right ?

Actually in terms of preventing infection in any wound would be irrigation (washing) of the wound with losts of water. And frequently. Whether the dressing has iodine or is plain doesn't really make much of a difference in most wounds in normal people with adequate immune systems. But if you are diabetic or have a poorer wound healing ablility or poorer immunity, the antiseptic in the bandage MAY make a difference to you.
OTOH, if you have a wound which you cannot clean out or irrigate with clean water, no amount of antiseptic bandages are going to make a difference to you......it WILL get infected.
