Half Dome fatality

This seems to happen about once a year. Very unfortunate and sad.

Sad indeed. The route is tough and not without risk.

I saw this posted on another website. There was some basic confusion about whether the person was "climbing" the half-dome. No, she was not technical climbing, but she was hiking/climbing the back slope using the attached safety chain.

After seeing videos of people climbing using the cables up to the top, I figured this is a bit too strenuous for the likes of me.

I have come down the cable route. I would call it 3rd or 4th class technical climbing. Gloves and sticky soled shoes are very useful. Friend of mine ski'd it on belay. Years later it was snowboarded un-roped.

I wonder if the route should not be rigged more like a European via ferrata. I imagine those see fatalities as well, from time to time, and do require technical gear which the typical hiker will not possess.

appears to be two cables, amenable to carabiner attachment, and
supervised by permit. proximate cause seems be rain, perhaps poor boot choice, inadequate technique, inadequate training.

Would a via ferrata add something to the current arrangement? If so, what might help?

At via ferratas all the people are attached to the cable with security tether. On half dome it don´t seem to be mandatory. Perhaps it should.
