Immortal Jerky - 03/31/19 03:17 PM

I ws cleaning out and refreshing my "preparedness stockpile" yesterday and way in the back I found a couple of packets of turkey jerky (Costco brand) with an expiration date of 2005. I pulled them out, opened one, and helped myself. I have survived overnight with no stomach upsets, etc. so I thought I would pass on the good news of dried meat and its ability to keep for long periods of time.

These packets were stored outside in typically mild conditions - no freezing temps and only a few 90+ days, in the dark for about the last fifteen years. Water jugs and canned goods that were also in the stash seemed to be in good condition.

I should probably check stores more often than every fifteen years...

While my experience wasn't with turkey jerky or with Costco...I did once regret a similar experience. I expect that there was a big difference in how it was stored.
