"On Sunday, Jan. 26, Institute for American Indian Studies educator Griffin Kalin will lead a program on how to survive in the Eastern Woodlands without 21-centure (SIC) technology."

I am not affiliated with this organization. It is located in western CT, inexpensive, and looked interesting to me.

Th should be an interesting and worthwhile presentation. Native American cultures had developed life ways and strategies to cope with the regional environment that were often, if not usually, superior to those introduced by Europeans. Everything from clothing to housing...

Any older technology (pre-electricity or internal combustion), no matter how far back you go, is worth learning. When it comes to food collection though, it is very regionally specific. It is not wasted effort to learn it.

Indigenous people don't survive in the wilderness. They live there.
That's a quote from someone, I don't remember who.

Where I lived, they moved out in the winter.

Hmmm. Typo: the 26th is Saturday.

Lewis & Clark wintered over with the Mandans.

They observed and tried to treat many cases of frostbite on the natives as well as their own. Doesn't mean the locals didn't know what to do but sometimes countermeasures fail.

And frostbite is still with us, even with modern technology!

As i sit here in chilly 28F Ohio this evening ...

Guessing no follow-up available?

The article referenced the IAIS website but in 10 minutes of browsing I didn't see any associated information -- no video nor powerpoint, etc.

Sounded like a great topic. I hope someone attended and/or can provide us some highlights, information or a pointer to it.

Being from Ohio, it's something I have wondered about for a long time. Around here the general consensus concerns things like:

Eating lots of fats
Fire (obviously)
Movement
Small shelters (with or without fire source)
Shared bodily warmth

I wasn't able to attend. It's local for me, so perhaps next time.
