That's fun. Would like to see some waxed hemp in there too, the kind that makes a candle/wick that doesn't burn as fast as the jute and will work when wet. Could take out some of the twisted poly.

There are quite a few paracord derived products that incorporate some sort of waxed thread that resemble a candle wick and burn like one as well. I am in the process of replacing zipper pulls, lanyards, and similar items with flammable paracord. I have ignited a few short lengths and an inch or two (zipper pull size) will give a steady flame that should ignite any decent tinder/fire starter.

I would like to see Lawson offer his strong sheath in different variations - say completely filled with jute, fishing line, trail markers, or whatever, so that you would have a decent quantity when a situation arises...

That's pretty cool. We have yet to see any fire-starting cordage in the brick and mortar stores around here, but I'm keeping my eye out. This one looks interesting. I'm curious about pulling out just the jute or fishing line without having to pull the entire thing apart.

Good question. That is one reason I prefer to use the product in short lengths - zipper pulls, for instance. If I actually need to use the cord to start a fire, it is already chopped and the combustible cord is easily extracted. One inch of cord should be enough to get a fire with suitable dry tinder and small stuff going nicely.

Obviously, I am not planning to use this stuff routinely, so I do wonder, five to ten years down the road, will the cord dry out and work less effectively. No body speaks about that and perhaps only time will tell....

I really like the zipper pull idea, hikermor. It's a smart way to pack extra tinder. I imagine that if you melted the cut ends, it would be pretty water-proof.

The trick would be to melt the ends without igniting the red wick. It probably can be done, but it would be tricky. For now I am just leaving the ends unburnt - the zipper pull is also a very delicate brush for those critical archaeological situations! Patent pending....

Hot piece of metal would work.

my last zipper tie broke, and the tailor put in a new leather one, but used fishing line to tie the two ends together; that would stop unraveling without the risk of burning.
