There is a commercial product, the Puralytics solar water purifier made with a msh of titanium dioxide.
Depending on the intensity of the sunlight, it takes 2 to 4 hours for the blue color dye to disappear and indicate that the water is safe to drink.

Sounds interesting save for a couple of things:

1. Limitations associated with turbid water. Seem self apparent and quite limitating in survival situations. However, the presence of turbid material also harbor bacteria and present more surface area to anchor bacteria and protect it as wel.

2. Unusable in low light situations. . Consider night or cloudy situations. . .

3. Apparently the device depends on DISSOLVED oxygen for the production of Hydrogen peroxide and free radicals. Depending on the content of the water, it would likely not decontaminate water with toxic compounds present, nor does it appear to mention differing concentrations of bacteria, viral components and other biological matter present.

Sounds perfect for clear water in a stream on a sunny day. .
