Scrounging more supplies - 01/27/14 01:18 AM

Went to a gun show at the high school in Wasilla yesterday. Lots of expensive junk, but I noticed the sentinels at the front door who secure firearms people bring in by wire tying the actions open were using hot pink wire ties (aka zip ties, etc). So I asked them if I could have half a dozen. They are now stowed in a couple of my kits.

Bought a big round of gorilla tape, some scotch +33 electrical tape, and some 100 lb test Dacron braid fishing line. I grabbed a wad of tongue depressors last time I was at the doc's office with H1N1, so I spooled up some of my survival sticks. Basically, 3 feet of Gorilla tape spooled on one end, 3 feet of electrical tape on the other end, and 25 feet of fishing line in between. Use a swatch of electrical tape to secure the ends of the line to the stick. Again, disbursed into my kits.

So many things sitting on my workbench. Heat Shrink tubing, clear plastic straws, Elmer's glue, bags of lint and candle stubs. I could quit my job and still work full time on all my little projects and provisions. I just filled half my freezer with ham that I need to turn into home made spam and put up. It just never ends.

" I just filled half my freezer with ham"

like the other stuff - but that move with the ham was really smart. probably exactly what I need to do as well.

First you need a freezer. A few years ago we needed to replace the refridgerator and one of the questions asked was "How big"? So I got out a tape measure and determined the biggest size that would fit in that space -- "That big".
Then we got rid of one of those salt type water softeners that imo are really counter-productive and we had this big empty space in the garage. Sears had a freezer to fill that void and with that our cold food storage capacity tripled. Get one.

I have much of my line ( fishing) and tape ( various) wound around cards - either pretend credit cards that companies send you or larger plastic ones. 3x5 ish. Easier to load and carry.

Yep, I found that the tongue depressors were just right for the big three. Gorilla tape does make a bit of a wad on one end, though.

100 lb test Dacron line is pretty handy stuff. But you gotta be careful using it. It'll cut ya.

I like your tongue depressor idea. What do you use the Elmer's glue for, if you don't mind my asking?

One of several liquids I store in little sealed sections of straws. It has it's uses. Just one of those things that's easy to stow, and you never know what might come in handy.

Squeeze elmers into a keyway and once it sets up, that lock is done.

10-4. Good trick. Could come in handy one day. Thanks Ben.

Be forwarned that duck tape has a shelf life when stored in warm conditions like a shed, garage, or car. Periodically check it to make sure it's still sticky enough.

I don't use cans. Wide mouth pint jars.
