Just got a Mora

Up until now my outdoor knife has been an old USAF pilot's survival knife (which I plan to reprofile to a scandi grind).

I finally caved and purchased a Mora (#612, the #2 with the lower handguard) after reading countless places about how great they are for the money, and all I can say is WOW.

At the price these things are I'm surprised I hadn't purchased one before now. I also have a Bahco Laplander saw on the way and I think they'll compliment each other nicely.

I have dozens of Moras and I really love them! Funny though...I've reprofiled several of them to convex grind.

I bought a cheap pair on Sportsmans Guide one time. Loved it enough to drop $50 on one from Ragnar's. Only down side now is not getting out enough to enjoy them!

They are a great value.

I'm expecting Mora's new "Craftline Robust" to be delivered on Tuesday. Their thickest Mora yet at .126"

#10315; The Craftline Robust is a new model for heavy utility or Bushcraft work. The carbon steel blade is about 4 inches long, 3/4" wide, and .126" thick.

That's about 1/8", and the thickest blade on a Mora knife to date. The handle is about 4 3/4" long, and proportioned for average size hands. It comes with the new "dual sheath", which has a post on the front to allow attachment of another knife or other tool. The sheath has a belt hook that can be snapped over the belt. It will securely fit belts up to 1 3/4" wide, and can also be fastened over wider belts. The knife and sheath weigh about 4 3/4 ounces. This one feels like a worker. $15

You cannot go wrong with a Mora. I have a Mora 860 which has been my go to knife for the last couple of years. This knife is included in every kit I pack regardless of activity or destination .

I bought one of the Mora Robust knives as soon as I found out about them. It is definately the best Mora to date. All the Mora's are such a bargain. Here is my Robust, which has a 3/4 length tang, I checked with a magnet.

I like the knife, a little stouter blade is better IMHO.

However, a little below that on the web page is the Bushcraft Survival knife -- it shows a sheath with an oversheath attachment. The oversheath has a firesteel and small sharpening stone with it. Anyone know if the sheath/oversheath is available separately or if it can be ordered with the Robust?

Nothing more fun than messing with knives. After regrinding several into new lengths and profiles, I built a forge and made an anvil and built my own. I salvaged most of my fingers, and the burns are healing nicely.

Reprofiling to scandi grind of a Canadian belt knife had a bad outcome for our brother Hacksaw. The pilots survival knife seems primarily designed to carve a way out of a cockpit, and would likely be tempered tough and flexible, rather than hard and brittle. Hard and brittle supports a sharper edge, but is less amenable to prying abuse. Tough and flexible if perfect for abuse, but if the edge geometry is too thin, the edge will roll, thus ceasing to be an edge.

Bought 2 from Ragweed as soon as I heard about them. I love the regular ones but always thought a bit thicker steel would be better for a general purpose knife that might get abused. I have been carrying one on my belt even at work with the ambulance service. The sheaths have a button on the front that allows you to clip/piggyback another sheath. Seems a little awkward but I guess if they have other different knives with a compatable sheath it might be useful to have say a fish knife/robust pair.

Need some advise.

Specific to the Mora 840 clipper, does the tang extend the full length of the handle?

The Clipper's tang is pretty short, about halfway into the handle. There are other models with a longer 3/4th length tang.

If you go to google images and query "Mora 840 clipper tang" (no quotes) there are some x-ray pics.

Frankly I'm surprised they didn't go with a full length tang with the Robust (even if just a rat tail) to silence people's concerns about blade thickness and tang strength in one fell swoop. Mora's are apparently well regarded even without a full tang though.

Ragweed Forge has discontinued shipping out of the US due to an increasing backlog of orders and also the exchange costs/procedures. Too bad, I liked doing business with him. I will have to find another dealer.

Sad to hear that. I was hoping to place an order. He had the best prices around. I guess that meant modest margins, though. Can't blame him for keeping focus on his primary market.
