I have to agree with Jeanette - it comes free with most Adventure Medical Kit(s) and is an amazing book. I've never seen field trauma done so well smile

The Wilderness 911 book is by the same author, Eric Weiss, as the Comprehensive guide book but in a larger size with more details.

I've found the NOLS Wilderness Medicine book to be useful

I have been using A Comprehensive Guide to Wilderness & Travel Medicine for years. I have included a copy in my personal medical kit here in Afghanistan.

I like, and have used to good effect, Medicine for Mountaineering by James Wilkerson. I actually met the author on Denali, where he gave a very useful critique of a case we were treating.

Right now I'm reading through "Wilderness First Aid - Emergency Care for Remote Locations" by the National Safety Council and the Wilderness Medical Society. Pretty good so far. Supposed to have some advanced information.

UK based books but internationally recognized with international protocols. By far the best books I have on the subject and what I and others in my faculty recommend when we teach expedition medicine.

Lots of great references, I personally like the way the WMI one is organized for NOLS. Wilderness Medicine Institute - National Outdoor Leadership School

I suppose it goes without saying, but, I'll say it anyway. Any of these books will be far more effective if you take appropriate training to go with it. NOLS, AMC, SOLO, etc all run WFA, WFR, WEMT classes that will make a HUGE difference in your ability to deal with situations in the wild. Most of the courses on First Aid, and First Response by places like the Red Cross are great if you find someone within the 911 EMS range. They are designed to essentially stabilize someone until help can get them to a facility. Wilderness medicine gets into longer term scenarios. Very interesting, and spending a weekend, or a week in the field learning is a tremendous experience.
