Pet Survival

My dogs are on a raw diet and really don't like dry food. I guess I need to start storing canned wet food. What are your plans for your pet's survival?

To survival, I plan to cook the chunky dog first...just kidding, sorta.

Seriously though, I don't travel with my dogs. So, they'll be here at home or at a friend's house. If it comes down to a true life or death survival situation at home, then I always have about two weeks of dog food on hand. After that, I'll feed them what I can as long as it doesn't jeopardize the survival of human family members.

Lotus makes very good dry/canned food. Serves well as a base for whatever else you want to add, meat, vegetables, etc. To me, pets are like family and I make preps for them accordingly. Don't underestimate how effective a dogs bark can be against two legged and four legged critters. Its like having a 24/7 alarm system and that alone is worth a lot.

My dogs are on dry food and like it. I'm really not doing anything dog-specific for bug in / bug out preparations other than figuring them into my water consumption requirements and keeping a minimum of a week of food on hand for them.

My dogs get raw in the am and EVO kibble in the pm, that way in the event of a power outage they can eat kibble in the am and pm with no adjustment, been there and done that more than once. The bags of kibble are dated to be used about 10 to 12 months in advance so I store several bags in plastic containers.

If you want to spend the money there are several companies that make very good freeze dried raw diets that can be stored. However, they are spendy.

Seriously, like Rebwa my dog's kibble is date-stamped for 6 mo to a year so I keep plenty of extra on hand.

Like my car's gas tank, the dog food never goes below half-full.

I also feed our five dogs a raw food. For bug-out purposes and general traveling, we keep a supply of dehydrated raw food on hand. We use http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/products/embark/

For me, it's a little expensive for everyday feeding, but for the past four years, we use it when we travel and it works out great.

We've got catsw and they are like brothers and sisters to my seven year old. We keep at least a month's supply of food and litter on-hand at any given time. We've also got enough cat carriers, pre-loaded with a blankets, for all our four-pawed friends.

Yep, stock up on food and practice FIFO (first in, first out). Make sure you factor pets into your water supply and first aid kits.

Basically, just factor them in like any other family members.

RAW diet would be a bit painful. You might add solar panels to your garage, enough to power a chest freezer.
