Folding knife

I need a folding knife that I can open one-handed with a blade of 4.5 inches or longer. I tried the Pocket Bushman but I can't open it one handed. I've been checking the knives offered in the net and I can't find any knife that fits the bill. I will appreciate any suggestion.

How about the Kershaw Blur in S30V. It is smaller than the specified 4.5 inches in blade length but the S30V will more than compensate for a slightly larger blade in 440C for example.

That is a GREAT knife. I recently lost mine after 4 years, and I'm replacing it.

Be more specific. Left or right handed? Clip or no clip? You want assisted opening or not? Thumb stud, hole in the blade, etc? Any preferred steel? Price range?

Spyderco military version is about the right size. Cold steel Voyager is also about that size. Both right handed, non-assist opening.

Best bet is to go to a local knife store, if you have them. Play with lots of knives. Then order for $15 cheaper online

sounds like you have a cold steel dealer in Argentina where you live, try the New Generation of the Voyager, they are now ambi-clip after years of no change. One hand opening in various blade length at a reasonable price.

Right handed. Clip irrelevant. Ditto assisted opening. Thumb stud preferred but hole in blade acceptable. Any steel. Up to $150. Minimum Blade length 4.5" MANDATORY. Plastic handles unacceptable. Weight irrelevant.

I'm in Argentina. Lots of fixed blade knives available, but good folders are scarcer than hen's teeth.

I'm going to buy the knife on line from a U.S. source.

For cheap but solid, the Byrd line by Spyderco. You're going to hard pressed to find folders that big - I think the biggest they have is a 4". As for the other requirements, I think you may have to have a little flexibility.

Not that it's critical, but since DR has moved his knives from aeromedix to knifeworks, I've started looking there more often. So far I like what I've seen.

These knives are awesome, but maybe out of your price range. The XL Espada is the knife to get if you have a taste for the ostentatious. It's a monster. View those Cold Steel videos to get a sense of how big a 7.5" blade folder really is. A blade of 4.5" on a folder is already pretty huge. I've handled these knives, but I don't own them because I have a policy of not paying more than $75 for a folder.

Well the cold steel spartan is more of a weapon then a tool. But it is one hand opening and has a four and a half inch blade.
Only costs around $50.

Do you have an intended use for it?

Cold steel Spartan (plastic over steel liners)and Ti-Lites both meet your requirements as does the Benchmade 13220, but the geometries are completely different. The Spatan's a chopper, the Ti-Lite's a dagger, and the 13220's a mild clip.

I just bought a Benchmade LFK. Seems to be exactly what I need. It will probably arrive within the next two weeks. I'll let you know how it worked out. Thanks to all for your input (although I'm still mystified by the Maxpedition backpack).

I know the OP went with a Benchmade knife but I thought I'd put these out there in case others are looking as well. The Dozier knives from Kabar are a real bargen, tough, sharp and good quality steel . I found them online for considerably less than the MSRP.

They're making the handle shorter than the blade. I wonder what the purpose of that is. The blade sticks out from the handle when closed anyway. So, I might as well have a handle that's longer to cover the blade. That retractable fin is yet another moving part on a folding knife. Is this knife gimmicky?

It's none of my business, BUT, I'm very curious as to why someone might need a folder with a blade over 5 inches long?
Gaucho, a few months back didn't ask for advice on a fixed blade knife and eventually settle on a becker BK 2 for horizontal carry? How did that work out? or am i mistaken?

The horizontal carry was a flop as the knife is much too large for a comfortable carry. I ended up strapping it to my right leg, just below the knee. Anyway it got the job done (I had to blaze 500 trees for felling). A local artisan is now changing the scales for a decent pair of bone grips (much thinner, to accommodate my rather small hand)and changing the edge angle.

Many people have problem with BK2's sheath, it dulls the blade just by itself.

I own a BK2, and I really like the sheath. That's the first time I heard about the plastic sheath dulling the 1095 steel blade.

I don't know if it's the exact same problem as BK11. But the sheath is made of FRN, and edge rubs on sheath the way it's made. The glass fiber in FRN would dull the sheath instantly. I sold my BK11 as a result.

It's not specific to Kabar, rather any FRN sheath, include many spydercos like aqua salt and rock salt. I fixed my rock salt sheath with a plastic insert.

talking of knives:
The advice on what to send service people doesn't include Mr Ritters own fixed blade knife or even the pocket kits. Is that an obsolete article?
There's probably some explanation I can't think of, but just thought I'd mention it.

Thank you DiNana for your advise. The Fedex guy just dropped my new Benchmade LFK. It's just what I needed. Razor sharp out of the box and it opens with a flick of the wrist. I'm quite happy with my purchase.

Look around and see if you can't find an Ontario Hossom Retribution 1 folder. This is a very good and massive folding knife, once sold by Ontario Knives, designed by Jerry Hossom and manufactured by Fox of Italy. It's too big to be carried except in its belt pouch, but it's very well made, very stout, operates easily, comes very sharp and uses N690 steel (comparable to VG-10). At around $125, it's quite a deal.
