Re: My new PSK - 11/05/02 09:49 AM

it looks very nice but i would suggest a flint and matches instead of the lighter,
add a watercontainer and purfication tablets and you could throw out the chemical lightsticks because you already have an LED....

These are the contents of my survival kit:

signalling
imrovised mirror atached to lid

medical
5. plasters
4. imodium(intestinal sedative)
4. paracetamol
1. tube of potasium permanganate
cotten wool

fire
5. wind/waterproof matches
1. flint and steel
1. clipper lighter
1. hexamine

water
condom
12. puritabs

food
8. small hooks
6. weights
4. swivels
30ft line (18ib test)
20ft brass wire

cutting
wire saw
2. razor blades
hacksaw blade

misc
2. needles
thread
button compas
instructions

I would suggest more antiseptic than just 5ml. A few plasters(band aids) could come in useful. What about a wire saw if you can fit it in. Also a large scalpel blade aswell. Consider adding a few trick candles and an intestinal sedative.

How about a water carrier and some water purification tabs ?
Betadine will do in a pinch though.
What's the tongkat ali for ?
This may seem stupid but why a spanner in a PSK ?

Just be aware, caffeine is a diuretic. If ready access to plenty of water is questionable, it is likely best to stay away from the caffeine. Pete

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll slot in one or two condom but could not find any non-lubricated around. I might as well go for the flavor type [strawberry, mint, etc]. I already have a water purification liquid but too bulky to put in the PSK.

I use the tongkat ali [herbal root] to keep me warm at night eventhough it is suppose to be a natural replacement for viagra.

I add in spanner in the PSK because I will be operating in a hybrid Urban-Marine-Jungle environtment. It compliment my Leatherman Supertool. I anticipate that I may need to do emergency repair to an outboard engine or electrical motor.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hv added the aluminium foil. I have taken the chemical light stick out and the lighter, replace it with flint and matches which takes very little space. Now I have more space in the PSK. I'll expand the medical kit for the space saving.

In reply to:

I use the tongkat ali [herbal root] to keep me warm at night eventhough it is suppose to be a natural replacement for viagra.

I don't know much about tongkat ali but viagra is a vaso-dialator. As such it is bound to make you feel warmer since it will allow a more abundant flow of blood to the skin where you will sense warmth. Unfortunately this is exactly the wrong thing to do when there is a real risk of hypothermia. As you get cold the body naturally decreases blood flow to the surface to retain the body heat to the core organs where you need it to survive. Anything that reverses this is dangerous since it will allow the body heat to escape throught the surface. When treating for hypothermia it is almost always done from the inside out. Heated IV if the patient is unconscious or heated fluids and heated humidified O2 if conscious precede heating the survace. If a persons skin is warmed then the blood vessels dialate and the cold blood from the surface is dumped into the core where a rapid often dangerous cooling takes place.

This is a serious danger and not to be fooled with. Better to take a hot drink or other source of real heat rather than open up the surface blood vessels.

OTOH, if this tongkat ali somehow boosts the metabolism and that is it's mechanism of making you warmer then it might be much safer than viagra or other vasodialators would be.

disclaimer: I am not a doctor only an EMT basic. This is not meant as medical advice just expressing my best understanding of the subject. If one of the doctors on the forum would weigh-in on this I would welcome a more informed opinion.

Re: My new PSK - 11/09/02 01:48 AM

I have been doing a little digging and found that more people use tongkat ali as an aphrodisiac to aid sexual performance rather than to keep warm.
Anyway, in the tropical weather here where singapore and malaysia are, it is unlikely anyone will be suffering from hypothermia as temperatures rarely drop below 23 deg C at night.
Of course on the mountain (mount kinabalu) it can get pretty cold. Using a medication to keep warm is not the thing to do in hypothermia as minime said. Physically warm fluids oral or otherwise as well as a physical barrier to heat loss are the way to go.

But the tongkat ali and the condom can be considered part of a survival kit in this day and age
