Huge Updates to My Edible Wild Plant Blogs - 12/30/09 05:34 PM

Hey all, I've spent the last week tied to my computer improving my Edible Wild Plants Blog and it's Mobile Internent Device counterpart. They may look the same at first glance, but there's a whole lot more information for y'all on the individual plant pages. Currently 98 plants are discussed.

Sidenote #1: When I use the term "Winter" I mean winter in Houston, which is probably pretty different weather than where most of you live. Change "Winter" to fall or spring if you live north of Dallas.

Sidenote #2: No, I still don't have specific geographical locations listed for each plant. I haven't come up with a simple way of doing this which wouldn't break copyright laws.

-Blast, who is now going outside to play.

As long a you're not making any money and the information is for educational purposes only, reference information from other publications can usually be cited in footnotes as long as it's not a copied word for word reproduction. You can also use information or redraw maps if the information comes from several sources.

As an aside, if you want to do some coverage maps for your blog, showing the zones where these plants can be found, I could put them together for you if you can get me the information.

Thanks for the offer Nicdamus but I'll pass for now. The geographical data is spread through eleven books and assorted websites which is going to be a pain to consolidate. Considering I do want to make money off this someday somehow I want to build everything myself or get rights signed over to me free and clear. Less legal headaches that way and being someone who holds assorted patents, I'm a stickler for intellectual property rights...

USDA plant database includes location maps. Public database.

Thanks for doing the update work. Will be checking it out soon.

I think there are actually a number of USDA plant databases. Sometimes things are in the "invasive and noxious" database!

One nice thing is that on many entries there is a listing of ethnobotany literature.

Edit: I meant distribution maps not location maps, maybe same thing.

Your pictures are great!

Also in the USDA mix is a nutrition database that surprsingly has a lot of "wild" edibles, both plants and animals. But you have to be creative to find some of the stuff.
