Leatherman Wave - problem

Leatherman Wave - problem - 05/14/09 08:57 PM

I just got the Wave a few days ago based on lots of good stuff I've read here. It replaced a dual carry combo of a Swiss Army "fieldmaster" model and a S&W SWAT auto folder. The thumb "knob" on the scissors has already broken off and the non-serrated blade has gotten progressively harder to open with the thumb - in spite of oil. Do I just have a lemon?

I agree. This is unusual.

Some of their first production run items are a bit rough in terms of fit-and-finish. But the Wave has been out for quite a while.

I have every confidence that Leatherman will set this right.

I have the same knife, so call Leatherman and it should be fixed right away.

would I be better off with a Charge Ti? it looks like similar features but lighter. any reason if I'm returning it not to go with a different model? both wave and charge have the tools I want from my previous carry combo(one hand opening, screwdrivers, saw, scissors and two blades). I'll miss my toothpick, tweezers and "hook" from my SAK but I can live without those!

I like the Charge TTi (S30V knifeblade), don't have a Wave so can't do a direct comparison.

what do you all use the two side pockets in the sheath for? I found I can fit two of the following: a sharperner, a micro maglight, and a ferro. I'm leaning towards the ferro and light since w/ two blades I'll never need to sharpen in field.

Not to nitpick, but there are 4 pockets on the Wave sheath.

One in front, one on each side and one inside in back of the tool.

Very handy to carry a lighter and sharpening stone.

Hey thanks! I just took a closer look and found the one in the back (but not in front).

Kevin - The front space is right under the velcro. Not real big, or stretchy, but it's there.

And I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with Leatherman. Carried one most of my Army career. I think my first one was purchased mail order when I was in Germany in 1985 and have had at least one handy ever since. That original one rides in my wife's truck. She claimed it. Have a belt holster that holds a leatherman, a sak and a AAA maglite and a pen. Never left home without it.

A buddy broke his doing something stupid one time and it was replaced no questions asked.

+1 on contacting Leatherman. Their reputation for fixing problems like this is excellent and well-deserved.

I went back to carrying a Victorinox Classic SAK in addition to my Charge TTi just so I could have the tweezers and toothpick again. grin

I have a Leatherman TTI and 2 Waves (original and current). There is not a lot of difference between the TTi and new Wave except the blade steel, both are excellent tools.

Leatherman is known for their customer service, should be repaired no problem.

Hi,

In the TTI pouch I keep the bit kit in the rear pocket, Fenix L0D and Ferro Rod in the side pockets and because of your post I just found the pocket under the velcro; I do not know what to put in there (cash, sharpener)?

my holster has a snap, maybe that's why no front pocket. Thanks for the info. since I'm "replacing" a SAK with my leatherman for EDC I want to ask what more do you get out of carying both of yours?

good point! I could "downsize" to one of my basic SAKs and have both.

Leatherman has both cordura and leather sheaths on the market. Which ones are we discussing? Leatherman Waves
