Cheap GPS - 03/18/09 11:13 PM

I just saw a link to this product. Interesting, and cheap (Amazon has them for under $50)

Probably NOT for most members of this forum, but

It is not quite as compact as the picture makes it seem.
The size is 75mm(W) x 90mm(H) x 19mm(D)or about 3"(W) x 3.5"(H) x 0.75"(D).
It is still pretty compact, but not quite wristwatch size.

It seems to be a pretty stripped down unit so it should be simple.
I like the idea and will consider buying one when my old e-trek wears out.

I bought DW one for Christmas (scored a good deal). You can mark 3 different location with a push of a button or 2. When you get ready to return to a marked location, turn it on and select the location. It guides you back with a "compass like " look. The screen shows you the direction back with an arrow and an estimated distance. No "bread crumb" trail. It's easy tou use and gets you back to your car in a big parking lot. It would get you back to a starting location in a big city or large oudoor area, but no map. It's better than getting real lost, but many cell phones with GPS capability are probably better if you marked your starting location and only one toy to carry.

I can see the court case right now,

Lawyer 'The plaintiffs husband who had succumb to the cold watery depths had at first headed directly north up river along the river bank for a quarter of a mile before crossing the 200 yard bridge which spanned the river in a direct westerly direction before heading further down in a southerly direction for another quarter of a mile. Where upon the plaintiffs husband had become lost.....'

I can imagine that for some people it could be a false safety net. Its simplicity makes it look like some "magic arrow" that will lead you to safety no matter what. But when it breaks the people unflinchingly believing in this device are in big trouble.
It can be backup for people that know what they are doing but like I said I can imagine some people not paying attention as to where are they heading because they have this device with them and "it will surely take care of their return".
Well, it can be said for normal GPS too, but this is just too simple that it challenges to just turn it on and "relax".
