"The Cowboy Code"

"The Cowboy Code" - 02/25/09 02:55 PM

A friend sent me the link to this website: The Cowboy Code. I thought that this would be a good thing for the ETS crew to enjoy while drinking the morning coffee.

Although I was born in 1964, I still enjoy listening to Old Radio programs (such as the Lone Ranger (w/Brace Beemer) and Gunsmoke (w/William Conrad). I know we tend to over romanticize (sp?) life in the old west. Perhaps there's still something to be said for simple, sincere beliefs:

The Lone Ranger Creed

I believe that to have a friend, a man must be one.

That all men are created equal and that everyone has within himself the power to make this a better world.

That God put the firewood there, but that every man must gather and light it himself.

In being prepared physically, mentally, and morally to fight when necessary for that which is right.

That a man should make the most of what equipment he has.

That "this government, of the people, by the people, and for the people," shall live always.

That men should live by the rule of what is best for the greatest number.

That sooner or later...somewhere...somehow...we must settle with the world and make payment for what we have taken.

That all things change, but the truth, and the truth alone lives on forever.

I believe in my Creator, my country, my fellow man.

Hope you enjoyed this. Look forward to your thoughts.

Good words,

Brian, what part of Texas are you in?

3 guys are driving in a pickup truck.
Tell me which one is the real cowboy.

The guy in the middle. He don't have to drive and he don't have to mess with the gates.

What did I win? laugh

None, if it's one of them foreign jobs!

(Sorry, I guess a bit of Detroit is sinking in to me)

There's a great book along the same vein called Cowboy Ethics.

Benjammin,

My wife and I have lived in Dallas-Ft. Worth for the past 15 years. Unfortunately, I've only ridden a horse a few times in my life (a pony ride at a church festival nearly 40 years ago). Never worked as a cowboy but always wanted to grow up and be one.

Chris,

The real cowboy is the one sleeping in the truck bed while his buddies drive back to town at the end of the day. grin

Aloha,

There are two recent books in that series, the most recent is called "Cowboy Values".

I'd follow Kinky Friedman's Cowboy Logic before I followed the Lone Ranger's code. But that's just my life.

Re: "The Cowboy Code" - 02/25/09 06:23 PM

Only one can drive the pickup at a time, so what are the other two driving?

I'd figure the real cowboy would have to be the one driving the pickup. My reasoning is if it were a horse, then the real cowboy would be the one holding the reins. Real cowboys ain't doubled up in the saddle since the days of the Knights Templar, unless you figure they're being chased by the posse or a jealous husband, and one of them lost their mount while trying to get away. So the one holding the reins(or in this case at the wheel) has to be the real one, and the other two are just tenderfeet along for the ride.

Of course you could also say that no real cowboy would be using a pickup unless their horse was down, so then that'd make the one riding shotgun the real cowboy (everyone knows no real cowboy is gonna be the pivot man), and he's just catching a ride back to the ranch. He wouldn't ride in the bed because his hat would blow off in the wind, so he gets the window seat so he can roll and smoke or chew and spit without having to reach around someone to get to the window.

It's the middle.
But, he also has control of the radio and plays Sinatra, not that stuff from a CITY in the EAST.
CSG wins by default. The prize is a cutom OP Robinette pack saddle with custom base jumping parachute pack attached. This Idaho survivalist was at the local Ventura Fairgrounds gunshow raising gas money to get back home.
I told my mare Annie we were going basejumping. She told me even a scoop nosed arab wasn't that dumb.

Wicked! Base jumping is the shizznit around here. I've always wanted to ride a horse off the Perrine Bridge. laugh

Sorry I don't trust anything bigger than me that does not have and on/off switch.

The one in the middle: he's swallowing, not spitting the tobacco juice out the window.

If you swallow, you ain't a cowboy! Grandad taught me that much.
