Winter blizzards often close freeways and travelers get to overnight at the nearest mega-gas station. How to prepare?

Cash, toothbrush, change of underwear.

I'd much rather be stuck at a truck stop than in my car or at an airport.

Especially one of the newer super truck stops with shower facilities.

Stuck at a mega-gas station - that would be luxury!!

Step 1 - Fill the car with gas then park near the doors (faster access to restrooms)
Step 2 - go shopping!! Munchies, blankets, 12V cooking/entertainment gadgets, books, etc.
Step 3 - go back to car and settle in for a pretty easy night (compared to stuck in a ditch).

You can add additional steps if you need them (play video games, make phone calls) but gas stations are pretty well stocked so it won't really be roughing it unless you are one of the last to arrive. If you are prepared for a night in a ditch even that will be luxury.

The I-80 Truck Stop in Iowa or Little America in Wyoming are great places to get "stranded", always well stocked. (been stuck at both)

But back on topic, there are several "Truck stops" in the Carolinas that are just darn amazing. One is even owned by NASCAR driver Eliot Sadler, it's up in VA.

i'm ready for 72 hrs in a ditch. a truck stop would be dreamy, except for the crabby, complaining people who are likely to be there. the car might be preferable at some situations.

Point of order and clarification. The shower facilities at the truck stops are for those people who hold a CDL-A type (trucker) license. You have to show it to gain entry. Otherwise, you have to use lots of baby wipes in the regular bathroom.
