I belong to AAA and get them for free. They also have those TripTik things too (which, I believe can be done online now)

Nearly every state DOT gives them out for free, try their web site or a rest area on the interstate or the states visitors web site.

We have a large collection of maps as many areas where we live and visit do not have cell access...thusly no access to Google maps on the smartphone. All these maps shown here are kept in the bag (which has many more maps in it) and are taken on every long distance out of town trip. The white maps are old forestry maps and are almost collectibles as they show old roads/trails that are not on newer maps.

Based on our experiences, the best places (and in no certain order) to get free maps:

Tourist info offices

Chamber of Commerce offices

CO's (conservation Officers)...Yes, some here may have the odd map that they will hand out if asked.

Forestry offices

Sporting / Outdoors / RV shows...Many areas of the country are eager for visitors and often have free maps to hand out

Local Real Estate offices

Google Maps / Google Earth. Print them off beforehand.

The ham emergency comm groups I'm in use Thomas Guides, so that we're all on the same page. :->

They're books, not folding maps, and they're not pocketable, but they're detailed and readable.

If you're talking about the local steet maps, then any service station, convenience store, or supermarket will have them.

If you're looking for a state atlas or the big Thomas Guides books, I'd check the local bookstores.

Of course any map-specific store will have them, or you can order them directly from Rand-McNally or online.

not an answer to your question, but I selected a Garmin Nuvi 500 for my auto because it has topographic maps of the US (not Canada and Mexico) loaded in addition to the traditional road view...
