"The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has compiled a manual called “Disaster Preparedness Tokyo” (Tokyo Bousai*) to help households get fully prepared for an earthquake directly hitting Tokyo and other various disasters."

Japan is really-really ready for the big one.they have a major drill on the date of the huge quake in Tokyo years ago.
school kids have a large padded hood that is kept next to their desk,in their Parliament the hoods are by the desks also.
i have run a photo of a ration bottle sold over Japan.
for some really good info look for Japanology in Youtube and scroll around for the earthquake program.

Similiar books are seen at various countries. The Singapore one is also pretty impressive: http://www.scdf.gov.sg/community-volunteers/publications

I remember seeing the singapore one a decade ago. Used it as a example and case study for emergency comminucations.

Fabulous and quite comprehensive. The manga was the highlight for me... Reading this brochure, I realized that coastal Japan has it all - active volcanoes, typhoons, tornadoes and snow as well as earthquakes and tsunamis - Like SoCal, Minnesota and the Great Plains all rolled into one.......

Is there anything as wide ranging for the USA? I kinda doubt it.

The Survival Tips section has excellent ideas I've not seen before; well worth the read.

What a great resource, there's lots of great tips which make a lot of sense now, but leave you wondering, "Man, why didn't I think of that?" My favorites so far are using plastic bags and boards to protect your feet, and using a pair of pants to make an improvised backpack. thanks for sharing this
