This front page article keeps us upto date of recent developments in our numerous faults (at least the geological ones). The conclusions are typical, however: crustal blocks are moving, the threats are increasing or decreasing, future quakes are certainly coming - at uncertain intervals, but you will know for sure when the ground starts heaving.

Deeper in this edition there is also discussion of the continuing development and implementation of our early warning system for EQs. It will give seconds to minutes advance notice, depending upon your distance from the epicenter (tough luck if you are at the epicenter).

Even a little notice will be a big help

Yes, hikermor, I read this article on another site and kept looking for the bottom line. There wasn't one. Maybe this will cause an earthquake, unless it doesn't. Or if it does, it will be bigger, except if it's smaller.

Real bottom line - At some point in the future there will be more earthquakes. Best to be prepared. (And in my case being prepared means not living in an area where there is a real possibility to experience a major quake.)

I understand there are only two states, Iowa and Wisconsin< that have not experienced EQs in recorded history. Still, some places are more prone than others.

Risk assessment is an interesting topic. I am concerned with wild fires and EQs, but the, I don't bother with tornadoes or hurricanes. Winter storms are a very minor issue.

At least EQ preps are fairly straightforward. You get ready, and then you wait (and wait, and wait). Most of the preps that I take make good sense anyway for other possible emergencies.

It helps to marry a native Californian. Mrs. Hikermor is tough, strong, and resilient - qualities that are useful in living with me, I am sure.

Yes, i saw the news. I am not surprised. I lived very close to these fault zones for a long time. But a couple of months ago we moved to the Midwest.

My expectation is that there will higher activity on the 'side faults', before the San Andreas triggers. I could be wrong. Therefore, major quakes on the Garlock, up north around Lone Pune, and possibly transverse fault lines at Palmdale seem entirely possible.

I was very encouraged that they got the Earthquake warning system up and running. Practially speaking, what does it do? If you download the app, does your mobile phone start beeping or squealing ... when a warning is sent out?
