You can use Mylar Foil bags as liners in your buckets. Here is an example. I'd go with the heat seal bags rather than the ziplock bags. I've never ordered from the company I linked to, it's just one that I've been looking at for potential supplies.

Also, though you can buy a heat sealer, it's possible to heat seal Mylar Bags with a regular clothing iron.

After that, I sort of got lost in what you were asking regarding your water supply.

It is always good to prepare for emergencies.

Mylar bags are used to put your food in buckets:
http://www.survivalunlimited.com/buckets.htm

You use oxygen absorbers to get all the air out before sealing. This explains what you need to know:
http://www.survivalunlimited.com/foodstorage/oxyabsinfo.htm

Tips for sealing mylar bags:
http://www.survivalunlimited.com/foodstorage/mylarsealing.htm

This is a great site for doing your emergency preps one step at a time. It also has info on BOB's and 72 hour kits, stuff like that. I hope this helps you not feel so overwhelmed:

This page has a lot of information that you might be able to use. But there might be some repeat articles by Alan T. Hagan that might also be in LDS link. You will probably have to copy and paste this next URL:

Priorities:

Medical care

Warmth

Water

Food

Hygiene

It's not the end of it (oh no...), but I reckon you can't go wrong investing in the above.

And, of course, all of it is just gravy after you've taken first aid courses, wrote down contingency-specific plans, made a strong connection with your community and took upon a confident "survivor" mindset.

Am I right?

Another option to a well is a storage tank. Since you already have a spring. While a cistern is normally associated with a rain capture system it can hold water from any source. I essence it is a below ground concrete water tank.

Such a tank could easily store enough water to carry you over most expected drought or other disaster situation.

Being overwhelmed is just another part of the game if you care and are trying. How do you eat an elephant? one bite at a time.

I suggest taking an inventory of the most likely risks your family will face. Gear you preparation to the most likely. Once that is pretty much under control, consider the next most likely, etc. [It is okay to be a little arbitrary about the rankings - nobody can tell the future, after all.]

The good news is you probably will not have to face anything to taxing right away. You probably have time to calmly and thoughtfully prepare for most stuff as well as your resources allow.

Sounds like you have a nice piece of land to start. Keep at it and keep us informed. Go get 'em!

That's a pretty common reaction. Many people are pretty complacent and don't see the need for any kind of disaster preparation. Some people don't like to advertise at all, trying to protect their supplies from raiding in the event of an emergency. Other people try to quietly convert other people to the cause. Depends a lot on your position and the people around you.

Being a "nut" is "normal" for me. It's the way I've been my entire life. It has paid off many times to my advantage!!!

I actually don't care what most people think of me because I simply don't think or bother with most people.

I discuss these issues only with people that I care something about and that I trust (including ETS'ers)!!

I got laughed at, scorned and ridiculed.

Then I got into preparedness and things really went downhill.

Seriously, if you're gonna be shunned by society, at least have a good reason.
