Tragedy touched by irony. Devastation by gopher. If you haven't seen the report, here's a link.

Wow, gophers may have cause the levee break in Nevada.

This is a good warning to anyone depending on a levee or dam to keep them safe. Be ready to go at a momment's notice.

Thanks for the link.

Any engineer with six functioning brain cells would have had the levee built of rock, with soil just filling the cracks.

Blame the gophers... no one is going to step forward and say, "Hey, it was MY fault! I should have .....", are they?

... blaming gophers... the limbo of fault-finding... "how low can you go?"

in the mid '70s i worked for a summer on a ranch outside of klammath falls, oregon. field irrigation for alfalfa and wheat and barley was provided via levees/canals. one of the hands would drive the embankments daily to look for the beginnings of washouts caused by ground squirrels. somewhat larger than gophers, but burrowers just the same. i learned how to work a backhoe while fixing their damage.

real varmints, they are.

I didn't think "Were-Rabbit" but it makes total sense to me. Just make sure you have some "cheeeeese". don't forget to bring along the ever-wise Gromit for further structural analysis and consultation.

BTW, I watched that this weekend. I love Peter Sallis, what a great voice. Also, a huge "Last of the Summer Wine" fan.
