A Kenyan pilot survives 8 days in the bush.

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/071211/odds/odd_pilot_dc

He spent all 8 days at the plane wreckage and sent SMS message from his phone to his friends in the city. His friends initiated the massive search for him in the jungle.

He ate leaves and drank urine to survived. He was attacked by elephants while he sought shelter in the plane.

do you think his strategies for survival were good?

One, he was rocked by the elephants. That isn't the same thing as being attacked, he'd be dead if he was. They are a highly intelligent animal, they are likely to poke and shake new and interesting things that arouse their curiosity unless it looks fragile. I stick a strange metal box on your desk, what do you do with it?

But the thing that gets me is he had cell coverage, but with only broken ribs, he couldn't get himself out for 8 days? I've busted a number of my ribs, and it isn't fun, but you can still walk. There is a lot of stuff here that looks suspicious to my eye, although I'm willing to give him the benifit of the doubt and say the new media has missed a number of facts.

Walk yes, (very careful like) But walk through a jungle??? I’ve broken a single rib and to simply stand up or breathe was pure hell. Not to mention the threat of running through the trees by some man eating jungle monster. Must have been one tough little SOB.

That is part of my point- he had cell signal, he couldn't have been that far back. The article also pointed out that he crawled, their term- unless there is something more wrong with you, if you can crawl with busted ribs you can walk.

As for being eaten, most things that would might eat you will get into you busted aircraft with you. The exceptions that come to mind are all waterborne. :P
