I have a few compasses of different sizes and shapes and was wondering if storing them together will afect their magnetic properities on the long run.

Same question if they are stored in a metal (iron) drawer cabinet.

Can a compass be affected if surrounded by magnetic fields from a dozen commapsses around it ??

I honestly don't know the answer to your question, but why take the risk? Simply store them apart.

I don't think I have ever seen cautions about storing compasses next to one another, or inside an iron box.

I have tossed the same compass into a variety of environments for at least twenty years, and I have seen no adverse effects...

Compasses for sale are stacked together on the shelf, no harm.

Thanks guys.
I thought there is no problem, but wanted to be sure.

I am more concerned about having my GPS and tactical flash light near my compass.

I've been taught that a compass should never be stored near a strong (electro)magnetic field because it could permanently affect the compass needle accuracy, maybe even reverse its polarity. It's a pretty common bit of advice that I've come across in various manuals and literature. Silva website also has the following to say about the matter:

"Please be aware that a reverse polarity is caused by exposing your compass to articles with iron content (something as simple as being placed next to a pair of scissors or a knife for a length of time, microwaves, high tension wires, etc.)."
