A couple of potentially useful gadgets:

FLIROne

FLIR capability for you phone. Many potential uses, but I am not sure of the price. I have heard around $399.

IN1Case

iphone case with tools inside. I think this one would be much better with a battery pack and attachable stand alone GPS that does not rely on cell phone signal. It could then be considered survival gear.

Just to throw these out there in case you haven't seen them. No experience with either one, yet. I have reserved a FLIROne, but they did not list a price.

Standard disclaimer, no affiliation with either company.

Looks interesting, but I suspect the resolution is probably less than 64 pixels by 64 pixels. Even the 128 pixel by 128 pixels resolution of a long wave liquid Nitrogen cooled Agema Bolometer Camera when I was developing some dynamic thermographic imaging software for medical imaging applications back in the late 1990s, had limited use. Higher resolutions for civilian applications would get the government authorities upset as they wouldn't want the devices (i.e an iPhone has more computing power than an F22) ending on the tip of cheap lightweight IR guided missiles, cheap passive night vision imaging devices etc.

The company also has provided an SDK for 3rd party Apps, which could be interesting in developing a self diagnostic Breast Cancer App.

In the video when the narrator mentions that FLIR One "blends an actual picture with an infrared thermal image", are they using both the iPhone 5 camera and the FLIR One IR camera (offset) or does FLIR One have both cameras?

I like the concept and can see some valid uses, but I wonder whether it's enough to displace the Mophie battery case my iPhone sits in now.

The iPhone FLIR apparently has a secondary VGA camera (640x480 pixel) to take a standard visible video so as to provide an edge detection video stream, which is then mixed with the very low resolution interpolated Long Wave IR video stream to allow better interpretation of the heat picture, which would appear as in-distinguishable heat colour blobs due to the very low FLIR resolution.

What would be better would be to include a Sony ICX-405AL Monochrome CCD chip (656 x 494 pixels) for a few bucks more, which would perform the same function as the VGA camera for edge detection and also allow an active IR night vision with a IR emmiter LED to give the device another mode for night vision applications.

Well for a mere $2,999.00 we in the US can buy a FLIR Scout PS-32 Thermal Handheld Monocular with 320x240 pixel resolution. Note however that there are export restrictions, so it might be harder for you to order one from the UK. I see that Cabelas also lists this model in their web catalog.

That's expensive, but they are available (even more expensive) in the UK wink .

The VGA resolution microbolometer FPA's it would seem are a lot more difficult to obtain.
