My son and I found a piece of tyvek while out on a nature walk/roll yesterday. It's dirty and has some holes it so I need to clean and trim it before I know exactly how much I have.

My immediate thoughts were to make a tarp or ground sheet with it if it's big enough and stuff sacks if it isn't.

I haven't used tyvek to make anything before and wondered if the ETS brain trust had any other suggestions for projects or tips for working with tyvek?

Hi bacpacjac, I found many links to projects on the forum but I'm not sure what you want to do?

Try coping and pasting the search below into Google:
tyvek site:http://forums.equipped.org

Add what you are looking for to tyvek like tyvek tarp or tyvek poncho.

I hope this helps.

Thank you! I don't know how much of it is useful yet, so I guess I'm putting the cart before the horse.

Here is a site that sells fabrics as well as patterns for DIY projects:
Quest Outfitters

They have some interesting ideas for very light fabrics.

The good thing about Tyvek: waterproof, lets water vapor through and is (relatively) tough.

The bad: tends to be heavy and bulky to carry.

I have a bunch in my basement and wondered what to do with it. I was thinking of a poncho/ground cloth. My hesitation with the ground cloth is that the ground water vapor might come through, and defeat the purpose. Maybe a poncho, but I think an actual poncho, even an inexpensive one, would be less bulky and lighter and just as effective.

I will also be interested to see ideas for use.

I don't know anyone who has used it other than for wrapping a house under construction and as a tough envelope for shipping things.

It is a great vapor barrier but am not to sure how waterproof it is. Would like to learn more about that.

It does get noisy in the wind. To cut that down, my friends took the sheets of tyvek to the coin op laundromat (top loader) which seemed to make it a bit softer.

With duct tape I made a bivy out of the material I had.

Lots of options with this stuff.

hmmmm... my office keeps a stash of fed ex envelopes that I had completely forgotten about. (We don't use them anymore so they're just collecting dust.) I've only recently started viewing envelopes like that as potential DIY gear projects. Thank you for helping me put 2 and 2 together. DUH!

I only had my eyes open to tyvek in the last few months and it kind of feels like the day I realized what a little pot of gold my dryer lint is for this tight budget prepper. LOL!

A few of the gurus over at Zombie Squad use it for tarps and ground sheets. I figure there must be something to it. A bivvy is a great idea too, Blake. Thanks!

Since this piece was found and won't cost me anything except my time, I figure I'll give it a try and see how it goes.
