Is anyone familiar with the changes? and the potential impact for conventional VHF/UHF communications?

It's already made some older scanners less usable as the narrowband frequency allocations don't match the frequency step sizes in slightly older radios.

Massive impact. Here in Bucks County, they are replacing the entire radio system - which was just installed not too long ago!

The cost $22 million and now - it might not be needed. Oy, what a mess.

This mandate has been around for years with a February 2013 deadline. This is nothing new and agencies have know about it for a long time in order to plan for it. I imagine the date will get pushed like most of these things do for the folks who wait until the last minute to start worrying about it.

That's what's so annoying here...they KNEW the date was coming, and they are STILL scrambling to comply. Duuurrr...

Which suggests that we'll need to be extra-prepared when Congress' sequestration deadline is near. (US folks anyway)

As someone who doesn't use a radio in my daily work (I know, I'm not counting a mobile phone as a radio), I'm not familiar with this issue. So the narrowband requirement is primarily to avoid interference with the new digital TV signals?

If digital TV costs this much to adjust to, imagine if FourSquare had gone ahead and started disrupting GPS signals all over the place.
