Search and rescue responds to rescue beacon - at hotel

A bit of hotel room fun brought a group of six college-aged students more attention than they bargained for Friday evening, the Gallatin County Sheriff's Office reported Saturday.

Around 6 p.m., the group activated a personal locator beacon at their hotel on North Seventh Avenue, possibly attempting to locate each other with the device, Undersheriff Jim Oberhofer said.

“They thought it interacted with their avalanche beacons. It did not,” he said. “They didn't realize it communicated with a satellite.”

Answer to Question in Subject: The Internet spreads word of your stupidity far and wide.

Seriously, Doug, thank you for doing all your hard work… including doing all you can think of to make PLBs idiot-proof. (Too bad the world just produces better idiots to defeat the idiot proofing.) Having resources wasted like this has to be extremely frustrating to those involved.

the canoe sites are filled with storys of people setting
them off in the far north of Canada because they were
tired and wanted to go home..these things could turn into
another version of the easy to use CB radio that boaters
used to call for help from the Coast Guard because they were to lazy or cheap to top of their gas tanks and knew the CG would
show up to gas them up...thats was some years ago..the CG maybe
charging for those kind of "rescue calls" now..

The CG should be perfectly willing to give lazy boaters some gas... at ten times the going rate... cash in advance of pouring.

Or if cash is unavailable upfront, the CG can hold onto your boat nice and safe until it is.

Worse... You pay a huge fine. In this case I can't imagine the cost of the "rescue" would amount to much (send a deputy down to the hotel where the beacon went off and check it out).

Actually, apparently you don’t (in this case, at least). No citations were issued.

He said the Sheriff's Office did not issue any citations and chalked the incident up to a simple misunderstanding.

Sue

Now Sue, that would interfere with private commerce. So the CG cheerfully gives lazy boaters the radio channel that the tow services monitor. That way, the tow service can gas them up at ten times the going rate (and the boater can sit out in the water another hour or so).

And if its not too busy. The CG will also cheerfully inspect the boat and all its safety gear to ensure compliance with all applicable federal regulations. cool
