I had one due that about a week ago at school. Kept smelling something burning and finally located the right one when I saw smoke rising out of the top of it.

what kind of monitor was it hillbilly? My monitor is Mitshubishi 900U 19inch. It is great monitor. I don't understand how it can burn up plastic inside. It suppose to have CRT tube. The burning odour smell like the green electrode coating on PC motherboard. I had smell a few real motherboards burn up in flames twice.

It means you have two choices:

Upgrade now.
Upgrade soon.

You've got caps going in there probably, basedon the smell. You DO NOT fix a CRT at the consumer level, becuase there things in there that will send you across the room if you touch them and cause you to not remember what you touched or feel your fingers for a few hours. Turn it in to your local HAZMAT folks, and buy a new one.

If the "magic smoke" in your monitor escapes, it will stop working. Best to get rid of it before that. Sometimes the "magic smoke" becomes "magic fire". I've never seen this elusive beast, but apparently some monitors possess it.

I've seen this problem several times. It's an indication that you should start shopping for that LCD monitor that you've been wanting.

It may be a repairable condition, but you may have a difficult time finding someone who will do the work.

yeah, I finally dump the CRT monitor. It is a fire hazard. I just bought the samsung 20inch monitor. It has 1600x1200 resolution. it is awesome. It is as good as my old CRT monitor. <img src="/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Please tell me it was/will be disposed of properly. CRTs are full of heavy metals, and everything in there can (and should be) recycled.
