A nice survival job, especially when you consider that San Clemente is a bit on the barren side, mostly low scrub. Water is scarce. A good part of the island is restricted entry to everybody, including the military staff, because of its use for many years as a shore bombardment gunnery range, with its resultant baggage of unexploded ordnance. I made one trip into that area years ago, and it was follow the footsteps of the person in front of you and don't pick up anything, for good reason...
In archaeological jargon, "shell midden' refers to a pile of clams, mussel shells, and abalone - the result of piling up years of kitchen refuse in times gone by. On San Clemente island, "shell midden" sports a very different kind of shell....
