Lisa Bedford (www.SurvivalMom.com) this week highly recommended this new book "Build the Perfect Bug Out Bag" (by Creek Stewart) and I went ahead and ordered it from Amazon. It arrived yesterday.

Having read most of it and thumbed through all of it, I'm echoing The Survival Mom's recommendation. Am going to give a copy to my sister in Oregon who I've been nudging along in becoming better equipped in light of the earthquake threat out there (which was not widely known when we were kids).

For anyone who has been following ETS for long, the information in the book is largely redundant and will simply affirm what we've all already learned. But I'm always further motivated by good info on familiar subjects so consider the book a worthy read.

More importantly, this book would be a terrific guide for newbies. It is well organized and comprehensive while also being concise. It includes checklists at the end and gear suppliers.

One new tactic the book is prompting me to do is to wrap all my Bic lighters in duct tape. I hadn't thought to do that before, while I have duct tape wrapped around some other items. I have Bic lighters in a number of jackets and bags so those would be handy locations for also having a bit of duct tape.

Will go back through the book with a highlighter to catch some other tidbits.

The author also has a section on bug-out vehicles (including bicycles).

Thanks for the review!

I think I will probably buy this book. I value a positive review from someone here on ETS more than dozens reviews from random people on Amazon. Thanks for pointing out this new book and reviewing it.

I've found the bottoms of Bic lighters are no longer made as,they once were,i.e. visibility of contents:Butane!Duct tape around a card is the best solution,IMO.It will be easier to pack, you can get 6ft or better on a card & will be much easier to un-wind.Put rubberbands or innertube(rangerbands)on a Bic,they can be moved to see the contents, provide grip,& make an Xlnt wet/dry tinder,as well as a decent binding to keep the butane pedal locked-up!

Recently obtained "Building the Perfect Bug Out Bag. Excellent book, I echo the previous comments.

My question is, has anyone put together all of the items listed in the book, and if so, what make/model backpack did you use?

I've got a copy of this book. If anyone wants to borrow it and pass it along (kind of an ETS library), shoot me a PM. :-) I'll re-edit this post when it gets claimed.

Good info for starters, almost too basic for some folks. I found some good ideas in it, but about 80% is on this site if you poke around enough.

It's geared to the "run away in the woods" types more than anything else.

Like most books, I've taken some ideas, thrown others out.
