I'm getting partial information but the impression is using a CR2032 in a white or green LED Photon II will produce a dimmer light but longer battery life. Can anyone confirm this and does anyone know just how long a CR2032 in a white or green LED Photon II will last?

What I do know is a green LED will last twenty hours, as apposed to twelve hours with a white LED, with a pair of CR2016 batteries.

My guess would be 3x as long. 2032 has over twice the capacity of 2016, plus with the lower voltage you are driving the LED with less current. But toward the end it would be really dim due to the lower voltage too, so I'd say 2x is a more realistic estimate.

I sent E-mail to Photon Light and they said:

Jeanette, as the whites (or any other two battery model) were not designed with a single battery in mind no testing has been done. That being said we'd guess you'd probably get around 25-30 hours of use from a single Cr2016 in a Photon 2. If you were to be using a Freedom model the variable light feature could extend this time even further.

Just in general, I'd recommend the Freedom model over the Photon II...bit more secure vs. water, and the adjustable brightness is a very nice feature.

I like flashlights that have two options: On and off.

Both the CR2016 and CR2032 are rated as having a battery voltage of 3V. The CR2016 being half the thickness of a CR2032, also stored less energy.

Stacking 2 CR2016 together does not increased the amount of energy, it only double the battery voltage to 6V.

Hence using 2 CR2016, would produce a brighter light with no increase in the runitme. Using 1 CR2032, you will get a dimmer light but longer runtime.

Hope it help.

In other words if the resistance is constant and the voltage is lowered then the amperage is also lowered.

FYI, I recently tried using a single CR2032 in the newer Photon Freedom lights (white) and it would stay on continuously. CR2032's work in the older models fine but for some reason the newer ones require two CR2016 batteries to work properly. confused

The Freedom has circuitry that the II does not have. I wonder if that is what make the difference.

I believe you are correct about that. I've heard of other people having similar issues and seem to remember that it was the electronic instead of physical switch that made the difference. I don't remember where I read that though, so I can't give a reference.

One thing that I like to remind people about the Photon II (which I have owned in every regular LED color and given away at least a dozen) is that changing the batteries/battery can be somewhat challenging under the best circumstances. The #0 Philips screws are very tiny and made of fairly soft metal. I finally procured some replacements from LRI after losing one and partially stripping the heads on a few others.

Even though I carry the tool necessary, I've never changed the batteries in the field, and don't think I care to try. Especially if the lighting conditions were not great and I was not at full dexterity (very cold, very tired, etc.). I still EDC a Photon II though because it is so small that it is barely noticeable until needed.
