OK, so I'm pretty sure most of us have seen these, which are generally considered to be the same compound as Wetfire, just bigger, less expensive and not individually wrapped. And we probably all are familiar with the reputation that Wetfire has about drying out, so if you only use a few of these over the course of the summer... bah, hate throwing away good tinder.

So I'm thinking, what if we seal them? Wax, lacquer, shellac- I'll probably go wax. Does anyone else thing that will help shelf life once the one big card is opened and the out gasing begins, or am I just being crazy again?

I would use a shellac, possibly Marine spar type, like the REI or Nato Matches have on them.Once that stuff dries, there's really no mess at all.Wax on the other hand would aid in the sustainability factor for the flame but,wax is messy,Almost Always!

Hi guys,
Funny, I was just doing a little experiment of my own with these.
Heard it was essentially the same stuff, but cheaper. Saw the comparisson on youtube and had to do my little experiment.
I openend up the webers and took 3 pieces out, left two out in the open air and threw one in water and left it alone for 15 days. Dry ones still looked like they did on day one and the one I dunked in water was still there looking fine.
Then came part two and I lit them up by first shaving some off and igniting with my firesteel. All three lit up like they came right out of the package.
I'd almost say this stuff is better than wetfire, but I havn't done the same test on wetfire so I don't know realy.
Also I'm not realy sure it's the same stuff, as wetfire has a distinct chemical odor which the weber cubes lack.
Pharaoh.
