Might be a help if coverage is available. Due out in EU but no word on US yet.

The solar panels reside on the back, and the front is a full touch screen. Despite the new technologies, it should fit nicely in your pocket.

As I understand it, the basic flaw in the design is that most people carry their cell phones in their pockets, where it won't get any sunshine to charge it. But it might be useful for those who'll clip the cell phone to their car dashboards while driving, or stick it on a windowsill while at home.

From another article:

Quote:
"A full solar charge of around 10 to 14 hours will provide enough power for around four hours of talk time. The handset can still be charged normally using a conventional plug, with the solar panels used to top up the battery during use."

Given that it can be charged conventionally before leaving on an outing, it seems viable. It can then be topped off whenever the opportunity arises out in the field (like while hunkering down to await rescue). smile

In the article originally referenced by the OP, the author states:

Quote:
"Another group that might find this phone attractive would be those crazy outdoorsy types..."

Crazy, eh? I guess the world will be in the hands of crazy folks if TSHTF. Woohoo! wink
