Did anybody catch the Alaska Experiment on the discovery channel?
It looks pretty good. Four teams- 2 two person teams and 2 three person teams live in the Alaskan wilds for 3-4 months and have to survive. It looks pretty good. We'll see. I can't remember what night it is on exactly, I think Tuesday after Deadliest Catch.

What I thought was interesting is that they give them the gear (it appears) and don't train them on how to use it. Like a compass.

Now that I say it, it is more to true life. People getting the gear and getting in trouble because they don't know anything about it.

I saw it last night and am hooked.

Where do I sign up????

Though I have to admit that guy's two daughters were getting on my nerves.

Can't handle whining.

If I had to spend three months in a cabin with them I'd move out and sleep in a lean-to, the bears would be easier to deal with.

Yeah, the dad leaves his two daughters, who then ransack the supplies, looking for food...on the first day

I think we've got two shows mixed in the same thread. There's the Alaska Experiment and Expedition Alaska. Maybe it's just me but I hadn't noticed that much about GW on AE. They're usually commenting that they need to get enough wood &food for the weeks of winter they'll be there. EA on the other hand is the one loaded with scientists looking at how climate change is affecting the arctic.

On the topic of food, with "wilderness experts" on hand, you'd thing they'd have the sense to build fish traps instead of trying to catch them by rod & reel/hand. Same thing for canning vs. smoking the meat.

Part of it is they don't have the slightest idea how to saw. One of the teams was trying to use the saw sitting on the ground & the saw was binding as the log bent. (edit: this might have been two different teams) Those work only on the pull because they're so flexible and most things have to be cantilevered so the saw cut doesn't bend closed.

Don't mind the heft. I like a some meat on the bone... wink

It's the whining that drives me up the wall.

Makes the likelihood of a "Donner-Party" all the easier to contemplate.

(the one that whines the loudest, gets eaten.... grin )

I believe you are correct. Expedition Alaska is, as quoted, “a two-hour special that follows a team of international scientists, naturalists, and wildlife filmmakers on a quest to document and understand the effects of climate change on the vast Alaskan landscape.” Expedition Alaska features these scientists.

The Alaska Experiment, which is what this thread is about, is a show that “chronicles what happens when four teams of urban professionals try to survive the wilderness of Alaska” and features these teams of people.
