I'm looking for a decent starter FAK for the family. Not a major trauma bag or anything just something for each vehicale that has more in it than bandaids and wetwipes.
Any personal experience would be great.

Campmor has a house brand FAK, in several sizes - one of those might serve you well. Comparable to the AMK FAKs at a significantly better price. Campmor First Aid Kits

I second the AMK vote. Probably the most well thought out and useful line of kits out there. They range from "weight abhorring minimalist" to just short of the OR table. Something that's nice is the modularity of the larger kits. Let's you replace or upgrade without buying a lot of duplicate.

I checked out the specs on the Light and Fast Trail kit and I think that would make an excellent car kit for my family. Now I'm trying to decide between the "Personal" and the .5 Ultralight for my edc bag...decisions, decisions!

I'll third that vote.

If had to pick one point to poke the AMKs, IMO, is they don't have a lot for bulk bleeding, but that's nothing that can't be added.

If you don't like the AMKs, check Dougs list of stuff to put into a FAK. Other than the Rx items, nothing there that should be too hard to get. If there is something that you don't know what it is on the list, don't worry, you are probably better off without it. I would say probably his basic kit, but even the comprehensive I think needs more 4x4s. Personal preference.

And search through here. We have plenty of medics here who've tossed thier hats into the ring for FAK lists, and a lot of us non medics. The one I carry in my big survival kit has a twin in my car. If I'm building my own (like the one in my car), I like the box the army used up until recently for the individual first aid kit. It's about 4.5" on a side, and about 2 inches or so thick; about the same size a 1 qt canteen.

In addition to AMK...I'd look at Chinook Medical Gear, Inc.

Chinook Medical Gear, Inc.

First start with Doug Ritter's Medical Kits write-up and Adventure Medical Kits. AMK has a wide spectrum of kits depending on how many people, how many days and activity. Per DR, "Fundamentals" and "Backcountry" are the best choices from Adventure Medical. However, the Mountain Series Day Tripper is a best seller and if you compare the contents with the Ultralight .9, the Ultralight looks better to me and it costs less. I bought one of the larger kits for the truck and have an Ultralight .9 for backpack. YMMV which is why there are so many different kits.
