Some of Great Britian's Nuclear War Plans have been revealed:
SECRET documents detailing the government's emergency response to a nuclear attack have revealed officials had no plans for a mass civilian evacuation - but a strategy was in place for saving treasured works of art.

I imagine the United States plans are similar, certainly to protect the political class and leave the rest of us on our own, which should come as a surprise to no one on this board.

The UK quietly removed many treasures during WW2 just ahead of the Blitz. Lets be realistic. Nuclear attack on the british islands isn't going to be negated by red double decker buses bottlenecked in the chunnel , QE2 steaming full throttle down the Thames with schoolchildren waving union jacks and British Airways scrambling out of Heathrow to the music of Lakme' while Ozzie looks around disoriented. Lets hope the RN submarines and whoever the latest James Bond incarnation is keeps this danger from realisation.

But Chris, what precious artworks will the US be trying to save? I wonder if we have a current plan other than saving the politicians? Personally I would rather save my cats than the politicians. They are much smarter

Cats & Dogs are more useful than politicians. They eliminate vermin, whereas politicians subsidize them.

If you've seen Dr. Strangelove, then you know what the American plan is.

Purity of Essence.

We're an island - there's no-where to evacuate to. "Mass evacuation" can't work because where-ever you put a mass of people becomes a new target for the enemy's nukes.

The UK quietly removed many treasures during WW2 just ahead of the Blitz.

They also did this with the children of cities that were routinely bombed.

Ten years ago I toured Castle Howard, in northern England. If I remember correctly -- in 1940, a portion of the main building, which was filled with antiquities, caught on fire. The visiting children were able to save many of the items from destruction.

Oddly enough, Dr. Strangelove would be one of the few movies I would bother saving.
