The W-solo is a 2 person tent that doubles as a solar still!

From the website:

“(Emilian Dan) Cartis, A Romanian-born designer, is developing a water purifier called W-solo that doubles as shelter to provide immediate relief to people in hard-to-reach areas. It can produce up to six liters of potable water per day.”

I found this while at work surfing the web (shh) and thought I would pass it on to the group. This is only a prototype. I am looking around for more info on it. I will pass on what I find. I did find the guys website but it did not have anything on it about this item.

Here is the URL

the ideal conditons that makes a solar still work best, also will make the occupains even more dehydrated. I mean sitting/lying in a greenhouse-ish tent in a desert ?!?! Also it's a illusion that there is much water right under your feets in desert or other kind of places. And if there is a lot of water, you will be lying on wet ground directly. Which isn't good either. So i have ceriously doubt it's very practical...

This tent doesn't appear to work like the still you're thinking of. It's not designed to extract water from the ground. You apparently put dirty water on the "bottom layer", the heat from the sun evaporates the water and it condenses on the inside of the tent, where it rolls down to collection areas.

I wouldn't want to be in there while that's happening, but that's probably not the intent (heh) anyway. Looks like a dual purpose item... at night, it's a tent. During the day, it's a solar still. Kind of a neat idea, if he can pull it off.

Not the kind of tent I would want to sleep in after it's been converting all day...man the humidity. Also, I wonder what his plans are for cleaning the "dirty" water storage area. At some point after all this evaporation..it leaves behind the sludge..I would want to clean that up at some point...but that's just me.

Still...it's a neat idea, but I think he would have better luck just forgetting the tent part shrinking it a little and just calling it what it is..a solar still.

There you go... dragging reality into a perfectly good discussion.

I hadn't considered the clean up problem. Some solar still designs I've seen recommend flushing "the system" with the dirty water every so often to prevent sludge build up. If you did this with the tent, you'd flush out any leftovers, but you would have also washed your tent out with water too dirty to drink. Yuck.

The idea seems to have so much going for it... by using a still the size of a tent, you can get a lot more water per day. But, by using a still the size of a tent, you're carrying around two tents.

I would agree about the sleeping issue and cleaning. Maybe he has some answers for that. Don't know. Can't find to much else on it.

Here is his website. Look under the "work" tab and choose "pure". the Pure is a solar still. (3 little squares show other pics) He has no mention of the W-solo.
