happy new year to you all!

I started this thread for some (non) vital information for traveling to the east.
Now, my elder brother is leaving for China this friday for business, to a place four hours north from the capital. He is there for one week and stays in an hotel. he only does day travel during his stay. Now my question is what last minute preperations should he make, what is vital to bring, what should he absolutely not bring and how can he make his stay as pleasant as possible.

he has got his visa and injections. He is advised not to touch animals, or drink water, ice or eat vegetables washed.

thanks in advance,
Ryan

A few photo copies of his passport/visa stashed in a few different locations incase of loss or theft or confiscation of the origional (when outside the US I always keep my passport and about $100 US of local currancy on body in a waist pouch under the clothes), and good directions to the nearest consolate or embassy. And make sure he knows the local laws about carying things like knives, etc., or even prescription meds. I don't know much about travel in China, so YMMV

Which part of China? Bejing?
Chengde is about 4H north of Bejing.
See link about Chengde

Vital:
Winter Clothing
SAK
Travel Meds - for ailments like diarrhoea, vomiting
Contacts for embassies, consulates
Knowledge of nearby medical facilities
Travel Insurance

Also, a good sense of humour about the public toilets.

Ah, I regret not having seen this earlier. Has his trip finished yet? How did it go?

From what I heard of him the trip was fun and without incidents, thanks. He is just back in The Netherlands so I haven't had a chance to interrogate him yet....

Sadly when I wanted to pass on the info to my brother before he went ETS forums was offline ...but the advice is not in vain as he has to go later this year again.
