These bags come with a velcro closure along one side, if I´m right. It might be difficult to keep water out in heavy weather especialy `cause you have to keep the side a little bit opened for breating.

I think that these are for NBC casualties, and they double as good body bags. The special chemical treatment is probably charcoal (like NBC suits) .

I don't understand why you are interested in these. Are you trying to be equipped to not survive? Or are you thinking of using them as a cheap sleeping bag?

That would have been a hillarious title for this thread.

Benton,

I was looking around at different types of "space blanket" type alternatives and was interested in a "casualty blanket" like this one...casualty blanket . While surfing around I came across this "blanket bag" item and was wondering if it had any "survial properties"...could it be used like a "space blanket" or for shelter or ground cloth...just looking for different alternatives for my kit. After a second look I guess they are kind of "Body Baggish" huh?

Having spent an hour or so in one of these during Gulf One training, I can honestly say that if you actually went out and bought one of these then you are a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic. These bags are made of NBC suit material as stated above, however the active charcoal layer is next to the skin so you end up black from head to toe. The clear facepiece gets misted up completly unless you have an NBC fan forcing dry air into the bag, I didnt. It was possibly one of the most unpleasant hours I have ever spent.
