Surely everyone has heard of the Crazy show where contestants vote each other off the island. But the new survivor show looks better! Contestants just get "Dropped" in the ocean w/ a raft and the clothes on there back and they must survive. That is at least what i think happens by the 30 second commercial. Does anyone think this might be worth watching or is it just like all the other Survivor series? <img src="images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I wonder if it would be considered cheating if someone on there normally carried survival gear in their pockets everywhere they went.

So is this completley marine or do they go on land? I haven't seen any of them. Almost all the shows having anything to do with survival are patheticly wrong, have the usual media slant/ biasedment etc etc etc. Id rather come here anytime!

You're joking, right? ;-)

Check out the Africa "survival" experience...note the VERY nearby trailers, equipment, etc.

According to the new TV Guide that also includes a $100 shopping spree for supplies upon landfall. We should all be so lucky to crashland next to the KwiK-E-Mart. Maybe I'll stick an extra Visa card in the old PSK

I've monitored this fourm for some time and appreciate all the information. I have altered my EDC and made an urban PSK just based on the information here. I had to register just to post to this thread and I suppose I'll get flamed for this stance but here it goes.

I have watched a couple of the Survivor series and learned a lot about a survival situation. I realize that these people have medical personnel nearby should something go wrong and so forth. These "Survivors" however must build some sort of shelter, build a fire, and are given very little food. So to them there is an element of hardship.

Where I have learned a lot about a survival situation is the conflicts that arise between individuals. You get the spoiled 20-something individual who has never learned to work and watch them [censored] unrelentlessly when asked to throw a branch on the fire. This 20-something fails to realize that the 40-something guy has just spent 2 hours collecting the pile of firewood while they laid around gathering rays.

It is also interesting to see how quickly the 40-something guy will cut loose the hot looking 20-something chick because she is such a load. And to see the stupid choices they make under the artificially induced stress is worth it too.

In no way am I trying to imply that Survivor is real survival, but there are lessons to be learned. Primarily that I'd rather be "lost" alone or with someone I know than with strangers.

Welcome to the forum. There is no reason you should be flamed by anyone, your observations on the show are valid. I personally enjoy the show as a form of entertainment and for observations on human interaction and nature. While we might critique the various attempts the participants demonstrate at survival skills, we should not place ourselves in the position of being experts or place our abilities over anyone until we have been in their situation, even those situations we view as controlled. A gracious welcome to the ETS forums. While we do often disagree, and the dialogue is spirited, we are a rather genteel bunch. Flames (and how to make them in a pinch) are a subject of discussion round these parts - not the way we disagree.

While I have never seen 'Survivor' myself, I do understand about the instructive nature of watching how people behave in "out of element" situations. Your comments are most appreciated, and I hope you do continue to post.

The personal dynamic that evolves on these shows is very real. Unfortunately, due to the element of competition involved in the show and the fact that everyone knows that they will not be allowed to truely suffer, that personal dynamic can't be trusted to reflect how people will behave in a true survival situation. I believe that there would probably be less competitive friction and distrust in a true survival situation. IMHO, If there were any real animosity / competition in a true survival situation it would be settled rather quickly by domination or annihilation. I have a rather optimistic view of true human nature when stripped down to survival. I believe that people would quickly recognize each other as helpful resources that need to be truested, aided and relied upon. I also believe that in a real survival situation, anyone who fails to live up to the above mentioned optimistic scenario would quickly be regarded as a life threat and treated as such.

This show displays a behavior set which reflects strong but safe competition not true survival cooperation vs competition for life.

I think that it is, at once, more competitive and more tame.
